I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I've been so wrapped up in orders I never planned out a black Friday sale, so here is a coupon for 15% off anything in my Etsy shop. I'll leave it going through the end of the month. Use the coupon code Thanks9

Also here is a picture of a portion of the order I've been working on. Just want to show proof that I haven't been a total slacker :D

Etching Beads

Etching beads is pretty easy. There are a few different ways to do it, but the easiest is to purchase etching acid, plunk the beads in it (using proper safety of course), clean them up and they're all done!

Gradually over the years, I've been etching a larger and larger volume of beads. I've run into minor annoyances with etching, like when several beads are touching in the etching solution, so they have some shiny unetched spots. It's even more annoying when i have a strand of beads strung up, I etch them in liquid and when they come out, they have shiny spots on the ends of each bead where the beads were touching.

So here's how I currently etch a large amount of beads.

First you need a shaker cup
Make sure you get one that has a sealable lid and a plastic grate. I bought mine at Walmart for 5-7 dollars.

Etching solution is pretty important too I suppose.
I highly recommend Arrow Springs' etching crystals. You add hot water to the crystals and make a liquid solution that will last a long time.

Don't forget to be safe! Use gloves and safety glasses for this. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area. Keep all animals and small children away. This is not a chemical to play with!

Put your beads in the shaker cup. Keep in mind that they will get shaken a little bit. I don't use this method with beads that have raised stringer design on it. I mostly use it for large amounts of spacers, or other round beads.
Using your gloves and safety glasses, pour enough etching solution into the cup to submerge the beads. I do this over my slop sink in the basement. Seal the container with the grate in place and set a timer for 20 minutes.  I usually use this time to dip some mandrels, clean up the studio or whatever miscellaneous tasks I can do for 20 minutes. Every couple minutes I will gently shake the cup. This should make sure all the beads get an even coating of etching solution.

All done? Using proper safety, Pour the etching solution back into its container. The grate will hold the beads in the shaker cup. Add a little bit of baking soda to the shaker cup and a bit of water to be sure the solution is neutralized. I give the beads a good rinse with the shaker cup and then pour them all out onto a towel to let them dry.

Pretty easy right?

Back from Beadfest 2012

I'm back from Pennsylvania! Actually I've been back for a few weeks now, but I've been busy getting ready for my next show in less than two weeks. I think I might have overbooked myself a little bit.

So how did it go? It went very smoothly. The show was very well organized and that helped relieve a lot of stress. I purchased an artisan table which worked out perfectly for me. I really liked how they had all the artisans together, but I do wish they had labeled "Artisan alley" better. I had quite a few people who were surprised when I told them that everyone nearby was a self representing artist.

I got to meet lots of cool people. I was sitting next to someone selling kits for needle felting. I had never seen it before and while I'm not a huge fan of felt beads, I loved her little animal sculptures. They were just way too cute. On my other side, I was sitting next to Diane Dennis who creates amazing intricate beadwork.

I also got to Bobbi Helms of FatDogBeads. She has been a customer of mine on Etsy and it was really nice to meet her in person. Along with her, I was able to meet several lampworkers whos work I had admired online. They're work is just beautiful in person.

So how did I do financially? I made quite a few sales on Friday and was feeling pretty good about it, but Saturday and Sunday felt very slow. I made enough to come back again next year, but I have to keep my expenses down. As someone who is still very new to shows, I do have a lot to learn, but I am learning and getting better each time.

What will I do differently next year? Bring a cooler full of food! I was planning to do that this year, but about a week before the show I received an email with some last minute rules. One of which was "no outside food." This was my first year and I didn't want to get in any trouble, so I played it safe and only brought a protein bar and a small box of teddy grahams. That snack helped, but by the end of the day I wanted to eat everything in sight! Even if there is no outside food allowed, I might keep an ice chest in the car or hotel to help with food costs. Eating out and eating semi-healthy is expensive.

Another cost that I was surprised about was the tolls in Pennsylvania. Driving across New York cost me  $2.40 in tolls. Driving across Pennsylvania cost me at least $30. I was expecting toll roads, but I was thinking they would be a similar price to the NY thruway. I suppose it's a small cost on the grand scheme of things, but these things add up quickly!

I do plan to be back next year. I'm hoping these small changes on my part, will make it a more profitable show for me to attend in the future.

I've just been plugging away creating inventory for the next couple shows I have. Not much else to say, so I'll just post some pictures and be quiet :)

Who's Going to BeadFest?

I am! And I hope you will be there as well. I have a pass for you :)

I'm working hard trying to fill up my table. Things are coming along nicely, but I always have so much stuff I want to bring and there's really never enough time to do everything I want to do. I feel like I do my best work when I have a deadline though, so it's ok.

Though I get anxious when I see my fellow lampworkers posting in their blogs about how Beadfest is right around the corner. Then I logged into Beadfest's website and saw that there was a countdown timer. No pressure right?

Hope to see you all there.

What Have I Been up To?

What have I been up to you might ask, since I haven't updated here in over a month. Well, a lot of production. I have about six weeks to go until Beadfest in Pennsylvania. This will be the biggest show I've ever participated. Even if it wasn't the biggest one, it's still only my third show ever! I'm always nervous about shows, but this one especially.

I sell a lot of made to order style lampwork beads online and in person. Since I've been working on building up my inventory of made to order beads, I haven't had a lot of new items in my Etsy shop. When I do, I've actually been selling them on Facebook before I even get a chance to list them. I'm not complaining at all of course :) I'm truly appreciative of my customers, but it does make me look like I've been slacking off.

I did get a table set up in my house to help me visualize what I need to make. It's still looking a bit empty and I might end up reworking things a little bit. It all depends on where I'm at in mid August.

Here's where I'm at as of today

Still lots to do though. I'm having a little bit of trouble balancing two Etsy shops, Ebay, my own site, a show table and a  part time job. Something is bound to get neglected, like this blog.

Hope everyone is having a nice Spring and looking forward to summer. I haven't had a lot of new groundbreaking beads to share, but I have been keeping busy working on a new website! I will always list on Etsy and Ebay, but sometimes I feel that when you get a lot of items in your shop, it gets harder for customers to find what they need. I wanted to create something that was well organized and easy to shop by color, size, price or anything.

Decompressing after Spring Syracuse Innovative Beads Expo

I've been back from the Syracuse Innovative Beads Expo, for almost two weeks now, but I needed some time to unpack, decompress and sort through my oodles and oodles of leftover beads. But, here I am!

So how did the show go? It went smoothly and I made enough money to give it another try, but it was a little slower than I was expecting. I did get to meet a lot of bead people both buyers and sellers. I even got to meet one of my customers that had purchased from my Etsy shop several times. That was pretty neat for me.

This was my second show, so I feel like I was able to refine my table design quite a bit. I was very happy with it.
It will always be a work in process I'm sure, but I think it matches my scrollwork beads very nicely. I really like the modern clean look.

Here's a couple more closeups
As always, if anyone has any suggestions for improvement, feel free to comment. I'm still a bit of a newbie when it comes to shows.

And then when all is said and done, I have tons of inventory to list online, so everyone look out for it! I'm posting new beads almost daily. Help me find my desk under all these beads!

Lots of Lampwork Beads for the Upcoming Show

I've been working hard to get ready for my upcoming show on April 21 and 22 in Syracuse. Here's my table so far.

I've got some transparent glass beads with metallic threading and fine scrolls.

A newer style from me that has been received  very well from my customers. Each one has a base of color with a thick stripe of either metallic gold pink or peacock luster glass. The thick stripe is lined with thinner lines of organic silvered ivory glass. These look very slick and modern. Their shape can be used with pretty much anything, but I was thinking of earring pairs when I designed them.

More raised scrolls over rounds. These are my favorite to make.

This focal display is backlit and holds all my transparent focals. I have another one in the works for my solid colored pieces.

That's what I have to share for the week. What about you?

Updated Studio Tour

I was screwing around doing important work on pinterest the other day and making a board of creative spaces when I noticed that my own studio tour was in need of an update. It's been two years and since then I've gotten a new torch, work surface and tool chest, so I thought I'd take a few new pictures.

First off, I got a creation station.

I've heard rave reviews from a lot of people about it and how it helped their stringer control. I was pretty happy with my stringer control to begin with and I didn't notice a change when I installed it, but it does make my marathon torching sessions so much easier. Before, I was getting a lot of fatigue in my wrists after the first few hours and I always managed to put my elbows down in pieces of sharp glass. This helps me tremendously with that.

It also makes me feel like I'm riding a sweet motorcycle.

I've also upgraded my torch. I LOVE my torch. I've been using it for over a year now, but it's still my baby. It's a scorpion by GTT. I love that I can use the outer flame to get a lot of heat for larger beads and then crank it down to a pinpoint flame for stringer work.

She's beautiful!

I also got a tool chest.

Before I got the tool chest, I just piled everything on my right side. My frits and other jars of goodies were on a Lazy Susan to my left. It was pretty hard to find what I needed. Then the pile of tools got a little out of hand.

But now I have this fancy red tool chest that I wheel next to me when I'm working. I've got a drawer full of molds and bead rollers. I've got another for all my jars of frit and pixiedust and another for my tools. I still end up with a lot of stuff on my workstation because I'm a slob my muse needs a bit of creative chaos to function.

Here's the old studio setup.  I only really showed the major changes. Everything else is still about the same.

I bought this Lampwork Bead! Now what?

Lampwork beads are amazing beautiful pieces of wearable art. I love buying beads directly from other glass artists, but jewelry making isn't my passion, so I don't always know what to do with the bead. I can imagine it must be so much worse for people who fall in love with glass beads, but don't have any knowledge about jewelry making.
With that in mind, I wrote this basic basic pendant tutorial. I made this pendant in about ten minutes and most of my time was spent holding a camera with one hand and balancing my jewelry project with the other. You can use this technique with any bead if you have a long enough piece of wire or headpin. It's simple and can go with jeans and a t shirt or something fancier. You can find a lot of videos on youtube for this technique as well.

Here's the tools needed

You can purchase all these tools at Michael's or even some Walmarts. You need round nose pliers, flat nose pliers, chain nose pliers, and wire cutters. I think I got mine in a jewelry making kit when I was 12 or something. You can always buy nicer tools if you find yourself making lots of jewelry.

Here are the supplies you need.

A bead and a headpin. A headpin is just a piece of wire that has a ball on the end to prevent the bead from falling off. Many people make their own headpins by making the end into a spiral. I'm not going to get into that for now though. Make sure your headpin is about 1.5 inches longer than the bead.

You can get use whatever bead you want. You can even use a found object and drill a hole in it. I'm a bit partial to my own handmade lampwork beads, so I'll insert a shameless little plug here.

Start by threading the bead onto the headpin and holding the wire with your round nose pliers very close to the bead.

Bend the wire 90 degrees over the pliers.

Release the pliers and reposition them like so. You are going to use the round nose to make a loop so decide how big you would like your bail to be. If you have a favorite chain to use, make sure it will fit over the clasp. Bend the wire over the round nose to form half of the loop.
Reposition your pliers again and finish your loop. It's ok if it looks a little rough. You can neaten it up.

Put down your round nose pliers and use your flat nosed pliers to hold your loop. Next you will start wrapping the remaining wire around the loop. You can use your fingers if you want, but my fingers get too sweaty for that, so I use my chain nose pliers to grip the end of the wire and start wrapping.

Continue wrapping until you have two or three  wraps snug against each other. You'll probably be right up next to the bead right now. Depending on how long of a headpin you had, you might need to snip some wire off, so there's just a wee bit left.

Tuck it in with your chain nose pliers as best you can being careful not to damage the bead. Luckily lampwork beads are pretty hardy if they are properly annealed and have a nice puckered bead hole.
Put it on a chain and you're ready to go.

This is one of the most simple basic ways to make use of a beautiful bead. You can use sterling silver or cheap wire from Michaels. It is all up to you. Now go find some beautiful beads and start creating!

What's Your Favorite Metallic?

You've all probably noticed that I really enjoy working with stringer scroll designs. Doesn't matter if they're raised, or melted, I love them. I guess I just really like seeing a beautiful design come from a bunch of lines working together.

You've probably also noticed that I use a lot of metallic glass for my scrollwork designs. It really makes scrolls pop! I've been working with a lot of different types of metallics to see which ones I like best. Here's my first few experiments with it

The left bead has scrolls of Taxco by TAG. I really like this glass, but it is a little bit temperamental sometimes. It has a tendency to bubble if I give it a lot of heat. It really does reduce to a nice oilslick luster.

The middle bead is made from Nyx by Double Helix. It looks nice, but a little too subtle of a metallic for me. I think I look for a more mirror finish in my metallics. I do really like how the scrolls have a noticeable outline around them. It's a little hard to tell in this photo.

I think the last lentil wins for me. It's made with Double Helix's Triton glass. It has a very bright chrome mirror finish which is very nice. The only downside to this, is that the silver fumes the base glass a little bit.

There are so many silver glasses to play with that I won't be testing them all. It's just too pricey. What silver glasses do you like best?
